Thanks to the Urdu Academy of Andhra Pradesh, the work of illustrious artist, Abdul Rahman Chughtai, who beatified Ghalib’s ‘shayari’ with art, is now available after a gap of 81 years. The Urdu Academy has spent considerable time and money to acquire the book, restore and publish it afresh on glazed art paper. The attractive page make-up with forward by Sir Mohammad Iqbal, the poet of East, makes it a collector’s item. Primarily a poet of love, Ghalib’s poetry captures the dilemma of lover torn by conflicting forces of anguish and ecstasy, desire and frustration. Connoisseurs of art and poetry will surely lap up the album when it hits the stands next month.

The Vatican is not the only prestigious location to benefit from the magic touch of this small-town carpenter from Marcali in southwestern Hungary. And despite references from Hungary's own parliament, the country's biggest synagogue and the Swedish embassy here, a professional certificate is something the talented carpenter still lacks. Born to Roma parents, Rostas was abandoned in hospital and raised in a state institution, an unlikely start for an ambitious man who since childhood had wanted to become "the best restorer in the world". After thorough research in libraries and consultations with museums, Rostas cleans the parts, carves out the decaying bits and replaces them with meticulously selected and treated pieces before finally soaking the wood in an organic mordant. The painstakingly precise inlays change shade with the light, the carved banisters show rich ornamentation, and the solid structure seems immovable — although, apart from a refined system of tenon and mortise joints, a simple but strong system used for thousands of years, it is held together by one single screw. In gratitude and to leave a trace, he hid a bottle of wine and a letter in one of the banister columns.

Isla de especificidades, isla multicultural, Chipre, en la frontera histórica del Occidente cristiano y del Oriente musulmán, ofrece a lo largo de su superficie relativamente modesta (es la tercera isla del Mediterráneo en extensión) una amplia gama de atractivos históricos y culturales, diversidad de clima y un patrimonio culinario significativo. Para ello, en la parte sur, el sitio arquelógico de Chirokitia (declarado Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad por la UNESCO) nos muestra cómo vivían los hombres hacia el 5300 aC. No lejos de allí la pintoresca aldea montañesa de Lefkara atesora desde hace siglos el savoir-faire de sus mujeres en materia de encajes (el llamado lefkaritika ), del que cuentan, impresionó tanto a Leonardo da Vinci, que el célebre artista encargó para la mesa del altar de la catedral de Milán un mantel bordado por las tejedoras de este pueblo. Sin embargo, Larnaca posee el paseo marítimo más agradable de Chipre en el que algunos hoteles como Les Palmiers ofrecen vista al mar y la apacible y agradable atmósfera de un pueblo mediterráneo que vive al ritmo de las horas y en el que el tiempo avanza lentamente sin que importe mucho lo que sucede fuera. También, una bellísima iglesia ortodoxa (Ayios Lazaros), ordenada por el emperador de Bizancio León VI cuando, en el año 890, se descubrió allí la sepultura de San Lázaro (Lázaro de Betania), primer obispo de la antigua Kition, cuyo sarcófago puede verse en la cripta del templo. En el antiguo barrio turco se alza la Gran Mezquita Buyuk Kebir (algo abandonada desde que la población musulmana tuvo que refugiarse en la parte norte ocupada) y, frente a ésta, el Fuerte Franco, construido en el 1300 por los caballeros franceses y reconstruido en 1625 por los turcos.
