The remains of Leonardo da Vinci are to be exhumed by a group of scientists who plan to reconstruct his face to discover whether his famed masterpiece, the Mona Lisa, is a self-portrait in disguise. Da Vinci was originally buried in a church that was destroyed in the French revolution of 1789 and his remains were then reburied in the castle’s smaller chapel of Saint-Hubert in 1874. The head of the Italian team, Silvano Vincenti, said the first step would be to ascertain if the remains are Leonardo’s. Discussions between French cultural officials and the owners of the chateau have resulted in an agreement in principle and the plans could receive a formal go-ahead this summer.

Early Monday morning, my boss said he had a top-secret assignment for me, and that afternoon, I was flying to the land of my ancestors, aka Italy, where I walked the streets of Milan in search of my roots . A friend of a friend of a friend â” or something like that â” had a relative with lots of money, so much money he was ranked as one of the top 500 executives in the world, or maybe it was one of the top 500 executives in South Jersey. The recent hysteria following the attempted bombing of a Northwest Airlines jet over Detroit has reminded us again of our vulnerability to terrorism, not just in the air, but on our daily commute by train. After the Madrid bombings in March 2004 and the London subway attacks in 2005, it is really only a matter of time before terrorism once again strikes such a vulnerable target as mass transit. I want to vent about a well-known name brand toaster oven I purchased last May, and about what appears to be a lack of workmanship and longevity.

Leonardo is laid at Amboise castle, in the Loire valley, where he died in 1519, aged 67. Mona Lisa’s true identity has been a mystery for ages, with speculation ranging from Leonardo’s mother to Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Florentine merchant. We know that Mona Lisa was a specific person, she existed and it’s her portrait. If Leonardo heard about all this, he’d have a good chuckle.
